What is a Ceramic Coating and Is It Right for You?

Are you passionate about keeping your car looking pristine? Do you put the time into washing it multiple times per month? Would you like to make washing your car significantly easier to do? If your answer to these questions is yes, then a ceramic coating might be the form of paint protection best suited to you.

Automotive paint is applied in multiple layers. A primer is applied to the body panel, and the colour coat is laid on top of the primer. Then, a transparent clear coat is painted on top of the colour coat. It is this final clear coat that interacts with the environment throughout the vehicle’s life, and it is this coat which accumulates light scratches and swirl marks from physical contacts. The majority of swirls are typically created from wash towels and other media, but many other forms of contact may cause this, including clothing, keys, bags, animals, and human touch.

After employing a paint correction process to remove the desired amount of the swirl marks present in a car’s clear coat, it is highly recommended that some form of paint protection is applied in order to help preserve the newly-glossy finish. The traditional method for this is to apply a carnuba wax. This produces a rich gloss, but it typically only lasts about a month and is best suited for show cars that are driven very little.

A popular upgrade to wax is a synthetic sealant. These products will typically last for several months, and can provide UV and chemical resistance along with hydrophobic properties that make washing your vehicle faster and easier.

A ceramic coating is just like a sealant, but more so. Durability ratings start at a year and can extend up to five years depending on the product and how it is maintained. Chemical resistance can rival the pH of most soaps. And some coatings feature extreme water contact angles, resulting in very impressive hydrophobic properties: water quickly beading and rolling off your vehicle’s paint as opposed to sheeting and sticking on an uncoated vehicle.

Lastly, ceramic coatings, while very thin, are substantial enough to resist much of the light scratching that occurs in careful hand washing. This characteristic, combined with their hydrophobic property reducing the amount of time and effort required to clean the vehicle, results in a paint protection system that, with a modest amount of regular care and attention, enables you to keep your vehicle looking pristine for years after it has been polished.
